MathCounts is a national competitive math program that is sponsored in Kentucky by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers. MathCounts handbooks and problem sets are used by the BSS club to practice problem solving and introduce advanced math concepts, including algebra, geometry, radicals, and probability. Keep in mind that this is NOT remedial math! The team will hold weekly meetings on Mondays after school (2:30-3:45) at Blessed Sacrament. There IS homework because we believe that "practice makes perfect!" Each student must have a scientific calculator and bring it to all meetings. "Mathletes" have fun, too! Members can win candy bars by scoring highest on our weekly "Candy Bar Round". We also eat a lot (food for thought)! Mathcounts parents provide snacks and drinks at every meeting. In addition to preparing for the actual MathCounts chapter competition in February in which the top eight students will compete, the team participates in at least 2 other competitions against local schools for practice. All members will take part in those competitions. Parents may be asked to supply snacks, or work at math competitions. To join MathCounts...
